Winter workplace health - five top tips to stay in tip top condition.

We put our heads together in the office to deliver the “TOP FIVE” ways you can look after your health this winter, and stay on top of chills, viruses and the blues during the chilly months…

1. More water, less alcohol

Stay hydrated at work. Not only can dehydration cause drowsiness and sluggishness, but also a hydrated body is better equipped to fight infection! Keep a water bottle with you as you work, and think about setting reminders to take a gulp every now and then. Also, be mindful of your alcohol consumption outside of work hours. It can harm your immune system’s effectiveness and leave you open to attack from winter viruses. When drinking alcohol, be sure and keep your water intake up to keep your body hydrated!

Note: keep an eye on your caffeine intake as well. It’s a stimulant, so can play havoc with your sleep cycle if consumed too late in the day. And, we need our sleep to keep immunity at its peak.

2. Eat well

Seems straight forward, right? But we all know how easy it is to default to ‘quick and easy’ high calorie, low value treats when it’s colder. Lunch on leafy salads with good protein added, and fruits (especially citrus for vitamin C), avoiding unhealthy, greasy food. When possible, don’t eat lunch at your desk. Getting outside not only prevents overeating, it gives you a break and a bit of exercise. Speaking of which…

3. Manage your stress

Nothing hits your ability to stay healthy like stress! Make time to be good to yourself. Doing things that you enjoy, even if for a short amount of time, go a long way to addressing the stress imbalance that can build up in our bodies. If you’re feeling overwhelmed… take a moment to sit and just breathe. Eyes closed. In through the nose, out through the nose…

4. Keep it clean!

Many germs are spread through contact. Even when you’re super busy, always be hygienic and remember: a little hand sanitiser goes a long way…

5. Think about getting a jab…

At Ryan we get an office flu shot every winter, and it really seems to work for us! We do it as a team, so any needle-phobes get the moral support they need, and it really helps us to avoid that horrible, ghastly, nasty bed-ridden flu feeling that we all want to avoid!

Bonus tip! If you do get sick, think of others…

Don’t solider on. Take time to get better. The faster you recover, the quicker you can get back to working at 100%. Plus it means you’re not risking spreading viruses to more people at your workplace.
